The Prayer Center of Orland Park

Addiction is such a heavy word, and usually it makes us think of things we would never do. We think we’re safe from the struggle of addiction, but that isn’t the case for any of us.

We all have internal battles with some kind of addiction, whether it’s obviously harmful or seems innocent. We’re super concerned with our self-image, obsessively worry and work on school or careers, or can’t put down our phones for our lives, just to name a few.

What these things have in common is the way they tie us down to this worldly life and begin chipping away at the relationship we each have with Allah (swt). The thing is, if you are spending all your time and energy on one or more of these things, you become too attached to the wrong thing.

Instead, invest that energy into the only thing that will really benefit you in the long run by including God in your daily life. This means keeping up with praying five times a day, yes, but it also means actively reminding yourself of Him.

One good habit that helps with this is purifying your intentions before doing anything. Just take a moment every day or several times a day to tell yourself you are doing such and such action for God, not to impress anyone else. This will hopefully help keep you grounded and, while it’s important to enjoy this life, it’s essential to remember why we are here and that is to worship Allah swt.

The Prophet (SAW) said: Allah says: I am in accordance with the thoughts of My slave about Me; and I am with him, when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My heart. If he remembers Me in a group, I remember him in a better group (i.e. angels). If he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by a cubit. If he draws near Me by a cubit, I draw near him by the space covered by two hands. If he walks towards Me, I go to him running. (reported by Bukhari and Muslim).
